A newly opened tunnel in Taipei is set to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion in the Nangang District. The Shengji Tunnel, a NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project, connects Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park, offering a faster route between Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City.
The tunnel stretches approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter section underground. This development is expected to cut peak hour travel time between the research park and the vicinity of Nangang Station from 15–20 minutes to less than 10 minutes. This improvement is anticipated to benefit commuters and ease the flow of traffic on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road.
In addition to enhancing daily commutes, the Shengji Tunnel provides a vital alternative route during flooding or other emergencies that might affect Academia Road. The design also includes a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, improving accessibility and safety for non-motorized traffic.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, which opened its doors in 2018, plays an essential role in the region’s economic development, having attracted over 2,600 researchers and professionals. It has become a hub for biomedical research and biotechnology activities, contributing significantly to the growth of the sector in Nangang.
