Taiwan and the United States are bolstering their defense industry collaboration amid escalating security concerns, leading to heightened investments and a more integrated supply chain between the two nations. At the Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum held in Taipei, retired US Army General Charles Flynn commended Taiwan for its increased defense spending, efforts to modernize its military, and the adoption of advanced technologies. Flynn emphasized that Taiwan’s investments signify a robust commitment to safeguarding its security and sovereignty.
The forum witnessed its largest US delegation to date, with 41 representatives taking part, indicating a surge in interest from American defense firms in Taiwan’s market. Flynn highlighted that the growing number of participants underscores both the business opportunities present and the urgency prompted by regional security challenges. This reflects a strategic shift, as noted by Taiwan External Trade Development Council Chairman James Huang, who remarked that bilateral relations are evolving beyond traditional arms sales into a wider strategic industrial partnership.
Huang stressed that Taiwan’s expertise in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and low-Earth-orbit satellite systems can be leveraged for defense applications such as drones, AI-enabled systems, and secure communications. He indicated that Taiwan’s manufacturing prowess and system integration capabilities are well-aligned with advanced US defense technologies, paving the way for substantial collaborative opportunities.
Rupert Hammond-Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council, noted that the partnership aims to address not only Taiwan’s defense requirements but also to bolster global supply chains. He described the synergy between US defense innovation and Taiwan’s technology sector as a formidable base for establishing a competitive defense industry ecosystem.
Additionally, Taiwan has been expanding its cooperation with European partners. Representatives from Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic visited Taiwan earlier this month to explore defense technology collaboration and future reconstruction possibilities, including ventures in the drone and information technology sectors. Officials assert that these growing partnerships are part of efforts to reinforce defense supply chain resilience and strengthen technological cooperation in response to dynamic geopolitical challenges.
