In an unexpected turn of events, two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets, purchased by Taiwan from the United States, made an unplanned return to Hawaii shortly after takeoff, potentially leading to further delays in their delivery. The aircraft, identified by serial numbers 6727 and 6728, had initially departed from Hickam Field, only to circle back and land at the same airfield. The reasons behind this sudden return remain unclear at this time.
Taiwan’s acquisition of these jets is part of a larger order of 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 aircraft. These jets are intended to bolster the defense capabilities of Taiwan’s eastern region and will be stationed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County, operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing.
The original flight plan for the jets included a journey from Hawaii to Guam for refueling and resupply, before continuing on to Taiwan. The leg from Hawaii to Guam is expected to take approximately eight hours and 20 minutes, while the subsequent flight from Guam to Taiwan is estimated at four hours and 40 minutes.
The first of these aircraft was anticipated to reach Taiwan within this week. However, this recent development adds to the series of delays that have plagued the delivery schedule. Initially set for 2023, the timeline was already pushed back due to the relocation and restart of the production line, compounded by supply-chain disruptions. The remainder of the order is slated for delivery in 2027 and 2028.
