As Typhoon Bavi nears Taiwan, New Taipei City officials have initiated precautionary measures by ordering evacuations in several mountainous regions prone to landslides. Mayor Hou You-yi has specifically instructed the evacuation of residents in high-risk areas, with a particular focus on Wulai District, where there is an estimated 90% likelihood of landslides. The evacuation process is mandated to be completed by 6 p.m.
The approaching typhoon is expected to unleash heavy rainfall, with forecasts predicting over 500 millimeters of rain in the mountainous areas and along the northern coastline of New Taipei through Saturday. In response to these severe weather predictions, authorities have placed additional districts, including Sanxia, Pinglin, Shiding, Xindian, Xizhi, and Shenkeng, under landslide alerts to ensure public safety.
As of Thursday afternoon, Typhoon Bavi was positioned approximately 650 kilometers east of Taiwan’s southern tip. The storm is carrying maximum sustained winds reaching 162 kilometers per hour, posing a significant threat to the region. The intensity and trajectory of the typhoon are being closely monitored by weather officials.
Authorities are strongly advising residents in the affected areas to stay vigilant and adhere to evacuation and safety instructions. The potential for landslides and flooding makes prompt compliance with these directives crucial to minimizing risks and ensuring the safety of all residents in the path of the storm.
