China has urged the Philippines to desist from what it terms as provocative actions in the South China Sea, emphasizing that its coast guard will continue to safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. This call comes in the wake of a Philippine supply mission to a grounded vessel at Ren’ai Jiao, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, which China claims entered the area despite prior warnings from Beijing.
The Chinese coast guard monitored the Philippine supply ship during the operation and issued warnings, which Beijing insists were lawful measures. China has accused the Philippines of breaching commitments under the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, warning that such activities may threaten regional peace and stability.
Furthermore, China has committed to continuing its law-enforcement operations around Ren’ai Jiao and other regions of the Nansha Qundao, the name China uses for the Spratly Islands, to protect its asserted maritime rights. The ongoing tensions underscore the complex and often contentious nature of territorial claims in the South China Sea, a vital maritime area for global trade and regional security.
