As Chinese President Xi Jinping embarked on a visit to Cairo, he emphasized the importance of strengthening ties and expanding cooperation with Egypt, underscoring the enduring relationship between the two nations. Upon arrival, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were greeted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his spouse. The visit marks a significant milestone as China and Egypt celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations.
In a statement released prior to his visit, Xi highlighted the resilient bond between China and Egypt, which has withstood various changes in the global landscape. He advocated for enhanced efforts to reinforce the China-Egypt comprehensive strategic partnership and explore new avenues for collaboration. Emphasizing shared national development goals, Xi encouraged aligning their development strategies and fostering cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly focusing on projects that promise long-term economic gains.
Xi further proposed expanding partnerships in diverse fields such as education, tourism, science and technology, healthcare, sports, and archaeology. He asserted that increased exchanges would enhance mutual understanding and fortify the connection between the peoples of both countries. Stressing the importance of mutual support, Xi noted that China and Egypt should continue backing each other on crucial issues while safeguarding their common interests.
Describing Egypt as a vital partner, Xi emphasized its role in bolstering cooperation between China and the Arab world, as well as with African nations. He underscored the significance of both countries as members of the Global South, calling for closer coordination on international matters, stronger support for multilateral cooperation, and collaborative efforts to promote global peace and stability.
The visit is anticipated to further solidify political and economic ties between Beijing and Cairo, while opening new avenues for collaboration in sectors such as trade, infrastructure, and technology. Xi expressed China’s readiness to work with Egypt in building upon seven decades of diplomatic relations, aiming to inject fresh momentum into their comprehensive strategic partnership.
