Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the critical need for ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities in the face of mounting military pressure from China. Yui highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to increasing its defense budget and enhancing its ability to respond to potential security threats, emphasizing that the island cannot depend solely on external aid and must also focus on strengthening its own defense preparedness.

A proposed $14 billion weapons package for Taiwan is currently under review by the U.S. administration. This package has garnered support from U.S. lawmakers who view Taiwan’s defense requirements as increasingly urgent, given China’s escalating military activities in the region. Yui remarked that the scale of military support should be proportionate to the level of threat Taiwan faces, pointing to the frequent Chinese military exercises, warship deployments, and aircraft operations near the island.

Yui reiterated Taiwan’s objective to safeguard its security and democratic system through defensive measures. He stressed that maintaining Taiwan’s security is paramount, especially in light of the persistent military maneuvers by China. The representative conveyed Taiwan’s determination to invest in its defense to ensure it is well-prepared for any potential security challenges.

U.S. officials have affirmed that Washington’s policy toward Taiwan remains consistent, with Taiwan’s security support continuing to be a significant element of bilateral relations. Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan has expressed confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States. The island nation remains optimistic about the strength and stability of its long-term relationship with the U.S., even as it navigates the complexities of regional security dynamics.
