President William Lai of Taiwan has announced the country’s intention to enhance its role in advancing sustainable development throughout the Asia-Pacific region, capitalizing on its strengths in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation. This announcement was made during the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability held in Taipei, an event that gathers businesses and organizations from across Asia to focus on areas such as clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living.
Lai emphasized that resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity form the cornerstone of Taiwan’s strategy for sustainable development. The government is actively pursuing improvements in urban resilience, energy security, and the expansion of renewable energy sources. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance the nation’s power grid and energy storage capacities to support these initiatives.
A critical part of Taiwan’s strategy includes a comprehensive carbon reduction plan, which is backed by technological and financial initiatives. To support emissions reduction, the country has initiated the collection of carbon fee payments. This move aligns with Taiwan’s broader efforts to facilitate the transition to digitalization and net-zero operations within its industries.
To further aid this transition, the Taiwanese government plans to establish a NT$100 billion fund over the next eight years. This fund is intended to support businesses in their shift towards sustainable practices. Moreover, additional support is being extended to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through a diversified development program, ensuring that these smaller businesses can also participate in and benefit from the sustainable growth trajectory.
By leveraging its capabilities in semiconductors, information technology, and precision manufacturing, Taiwan aims to contribute significantly to global sustainability efforts. This strategic approach not only supports the nation’s sustainable growth but also aligns with broader global objectives in promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility.
